CMM STEP 4—QUESTIONING

The questions that “engage our thought” on a daily basis reflect our life purpose and influence the quality of our lives.

—Michael J. Gelb, How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci

After the performing/recording steps and/or after listening to the recorded playback, the fourth step of creative music making begins. Questioning in a CMM session means raising questions, but it also means thinking, discussing, assessing, contemplating, and evaluating those questions. The main challenge for participants is to know what questions to ask.

In CMM sessions it is recommended that questioning and discussion occur in a round-table format, with all participants sitting in a circle facing the center. A good technique is simply to go around the circle in order with everyone contributing to the flow of thoughts and perceptions. For each successive question, a new first respondent can be selected to begin the clockwise (or counterclockwise) order of follow-up responses.

The “questioning” step might begin with questions introduced at first by the facilitator. In a short time these questions can be raised and addressed directly by participants as they become internalized and self-directed, without any prodding from the facilitator.
